Living as Love: Living as Wild Earth
To bow at the feet of our greatest teachers — the wild mirrors of nature, the deep dreams of soul, the soft animal body of all those we belong to.
Listen up — This is an Un.Training !
Immerse for the love of practice, for the love of community and the healing of our place here on Earth.
Welcome. You’re (very likely) here because you know there is more to the practice of yoga than stretching and strengthening.
Perhaps you’ve noticed our fervent commitment at Awakening Arts to re-dignifying Yoga in the West.
Or the way we weave Wilderness Connection with Somatics and Tantra.
Perhaps you’ve connected with the vibrant community that gathers around our programs.
Or experienced a Terra Soma class and thought “What was that! How can I get more?”
Perhaps you’re a student of this way already and long for the depth of connection experienced in these co-emergent immersive offerings.
This year we’re offering a space for learning, devotion, and depth of experience unlike what we’ve offered since we began.
We began as a school for professional development.
We’re making a stand and changing form.
We want to continue to offer our depth and breadth of experience without the pressure or distraction of professional development.
We want to deliver a program that’s wholeheartedly for you.
Will it be viable? We sincerely don’t know, but we are willing to break the mould of "industry expectations” to honour what we see as necessary.
Does it mean you won’t receive the same quality of teaching from a high-integrity faculty of scholar-practitioners?
Not at all!
Does it mean we’ve given up on teaching the art of teaching?
Quite the opposite!
This is a deepening in our devotion to the necessary art of apprenticeship! The foundation of good teaching..
If you are a teacher or want to be, know this:
It is precisely that this immersion is NOT about teaching that it profoundly serves the teaching journey.
Let the practice birth the teacher in time.
There is no rush
In the words of Bayo Akomolafe
The times are urgent; let’s slow down
Plus — We’re still offering much of what we offered in our certified programs anyway.
Only it’s MORE. More spacious, more refined, more direct, more foundational and more advanced,
because truly living the foundations, is the advanced practice.
This is the ultimate antidote to imposter syndrome, misinterpretation, and making cringey empty content on the internet!
I see this shift from Training to Living as a radical necessary act of respect and reclamation.
In the words of the much loved Josh Shrei from The Emerald:
Knowledge is something that’s earned slowly, somatically, in context. And it’s earned through a person's own commitment to being in relationship over time. Knowledge is relational embodiment practice.
We want to offer you this:
— an immersion for practitioners new and old to discover new depths of practice.
— a program for those on the path to becoming yoga teachers to grow familiarity with these new depths and to hone their own knowing, before stepping up to teach.
— an autonomous space for qualified teachers to step out of generating and into nourishment, re.inspiration and the furthering of their embodied knowledge.
— a space for us all to untangle from the misinterpretation rife in Western Yoga. To find ground together, to discuss and practice, what change can look like going forward.
— time to develop a practice of movement and connection that fits coherently with the context of this world now and your place in it.
This immersion is a balance of:
— Time in solitude
— Time with the wild land
— Time with community to break bread, share songs, skills and craft.
— Timeless space to wander, to listen and learn with land and kin.
— Dedicated ritual time to immerse in guided practice.
— Council time to reflect, connect and integrate experience into a wider web of belonging
For the soul of the practice, the heart of humanity and the body of our dreaming earth. e

Future teachers consider this,
If you're wondering where to do you first 200hr, let this be where you steep before you take the seat.
In a month long YTT, which is the common format, deeply life-altering experiences can emerge in practice, and then it’s the lunch bell, afternoon class, evening practice, group dinner and bedtime, by 6:30am the day begins again — another new discovery, another profound experience. The program has to keep moving to cover the range of topics and experience required for a registered professional training. To the best of their ability students have to keep up. What’s opened within the participants internal world during a 200hr training is rarely served in the way it deserves, particularly in large trainings. Immersive month long programs offer a therapeutic dose of practice often without the therapeutic pace of integration, nor the appropriate relational support.
I’ve witnessed over 300 people move through their first 200hr, some of those were students I studied with, some on trainings I supported, and over 100 on the trainings I’ve facilitated. Most students attending a YTT have a steady-ish āsana practice but everything else is new information and new experience. Those 200hrs are a wild ride, even for those who have been practicing āsana for 10, 20 years! And it’s ok, mostly we get through. 95% of our students rave about our previous trainings, inclusive of the way we’ve held space for connection and integration through the big stuff. And still, we believe there is a better way to become the teacher you deserve to be, and our future practitioners deserve to receive.
Existing 200hr + Teachers,
It happens to the best of us! When we start teaching the centre of our practice shifts. We move from self exploration to a kind of self-exploitation, digging into personal experience to create something for others. It’s searingly beautiful how generous we become in our craft, and yet, over time it takes its toll. We lose the depth of our own practice and begin to question the sincerity of our work. #impostersyndrome anyone?
If you’re concerned that more registered hours will equal more credibility, consider this reality of the industry: there is currently no professional registration that acknowledges study beyond the 500hr mark. The ceiling is your 200hrs, plus 300hrs. There’s zero registerable difference between a 500hr teacher and a 5,000hr teacher. If you’re committed to teaching you’ll complete well over 500hrs of study! You’ll dedicated so many hours to learning and developing your craft you’ll stop counting.
The calibre of your teaching will never show in numbers, it will always shine through the sincerity of your own experience and devotion.
